Chip and I built a bond during his years at Macalester which has lasted more than thirty years. He was -- and continued to be -- dedicated to connecting thinking and doing. Exploring ideas excited him, but it was never enough in itself. In all my years at Macalester, Chip was the only editor of the Mac Weekly, the student newspaper, who insisted that it be printed in a union shop. And he made it happen. It has meant a great deal to me in all these years since to know that Chip was in the world, trying in so many ways to make it a better place. I know that his impact will continue through all of us that he touched.

Charles and i coached Mt Airy senior l and Chestnut Hill American Legion baseball. We enjoyed each others sense of humor and shared a dedication to youth development. He was a reliable and ersourceful ally, introducing agility and strength exercises to the practices. Charles was a kind and loving father to Matt and Carlos. After baseball,, we talked about his long distance swimming practices a topic I love. I wanted to accompany him on one of his swims in the uper Schuylkyll. I thought I would eventually get to do it. Charles I wish I had swum and not put it off. It would have been fun.
