Thomas Powers Obituary

Thomas Anthony Powers, a cherished son, father, brother, and beloved friend, passed away on April 4, 2026, at the age of 78.

He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (née Schwyter) and father to Leah, Stacie, Shawn, Zachary, Electra, Mercedes, and Pierre. He was a proud grandfather to his many grandchildren, who brought him great joy. Thomas is also survived by his siblings, Kevin and Sheila. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Frances, and his sister, Betty Jane.

Thomas was raised in the Swampoodle section of Philadelphia, a point of pride throughout his life. He often shared stories of his childhood there, including selling peanuts and scorecards for five and ten cents to ballpark patrons outside Connie Mack Stadium. He maintained lifelong friendships with those from the "old neighborhood," gathering with them regularly over the years.

A proud Vietnam veteran, Thomas served as a paratrooper from 1965-1968 in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, known as the "Sky Soldiers" and as the first major U.S. Army combat unit deployed to Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service and remained actively involved in local veterans organizations and groups, maintaining strong ties with those who shared that experience.

He was a graduate of Delaware Valley College and spent his career as a roofer and business owner. He had a passion for gardening and, for many years, kept a vegetable garden that was the envy of the neighborhood. He valued time spent with family and friends and took pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

Thomas will be remembered for his hearty laugh, his love for his family, and his loyalty to those closest to him. As we remember Thomas, we honor a life filled with love, sacrifice, and friendship. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Donations in his name may be made to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 4, PO Box 1702, 1050 Street Road, Southampton, Pa 18966.
