Susanna Mullen Obituary

Susanna Koller Mullen died June 4 at her home in The Pinnacle senior community in Plymouth Meeting.

Born August 26, 1938, in Roxborough, Philadelphia, to Florence and Paul Conrad Koller, she was one of 12 children in a strong German-Irish family.Sue attended St. Mary of the Assumption grade school in Manayunk and was a proud 1956 graduate of John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School.

She met John F. Mullen, the love of her life, at a Jam Session in New Jersey. The couple married in May 1962 and had four children. Their home soon became the hub for both of their extended families. From weeknight dinners to Sunday Eagles games and every holiday, Sue hosted their parents, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and friends who were like family.

Sue had a caretaker's heart. She provided care to several relatives who stayed in her home during extended illnesses and regularly incorporated single relatives and friends into the fabric of the Mullen family life. She became the "good-hearted woman" to her husband's "good-timing man," as the Willie Nelson song goes, with Jack wanting everyone to enjoy themselves and Sue holding down the fort to make it all happen.

Her 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild were her pride and joy. She loved nothing more than to rock them as babies, whispering "lay heady down," dance with them as toddlers and tweens, and beam with joy as they completed the milestones of teenage years, graduations, weddings and more. She wasn't the best cook, but she could blow through your laundry pile in no time and took immense joy in doing so.

Over the course of her life, Sue worked for ESSO, Transport International Pool, Lee Tires and Pennock Floral. She served her parish churches, first St. Mary of the Assumption and later St. Matthew in Conshohocken, and was the co-founder more than 50 years ago of a kids' Halloween parade tradition on their street in Roxborough that continues to this day.

In addition to her parents, Sue was predeceased by her husband and "Huckleberry Friend," Jack; grandson Zachary Brandt; son-in-law David Collins; and siblings Elizabeth, George, Robert, John, Paul, Anthony, Henry, Florence and Rosemary.

She is survived by her children Mary Brandt (Eric), Jack Mullen (Catherine), Cecilia Quarino (Michael) and Jennifer Collins; as well as her grandchildren William Walker; John, Dennis and Joseph Mullen; Sara and Benjamin Brandt; Megan Quarino Gangl; Molly and Michael Quarino; and Grace and Samuel Collins; and great-grandson Wesley Walker. She is also survived by sisters Bernadette Rumsey and Eileen Sobol (Paul), a host of nieces and nephews, and friends old and new, some met most recently at the Pinnacle senior community.

The family would like to thank the staffs of The Pinnacle, Suburban Geriatrics and Vitality Hospice for the extraordinary and compassionate care they provided.
