Sister Jeanne Johnson Obituary

Sister Jeanne Charlotte Johnson, V.H.M., 95, died in the Holy Family Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor of Philadelphia on Friday, May 8, 2020.   Sister Jeanne was born Jean Louise Johnson in Springfield, Missouri, to William Wood and Irene Nora (Everett) Johnson on March 26, 1925. She was a member of the St. Agnes Cathedral Parish and graduated high school from the St. De Chantal Academy at Elfindale in June, 1942. She completed her undergraduate degree in French at Drury College in 1945 and then received a master’s degree from Fordham University.

Sister Jeanne entered the Sisters of the Visitation at Elfindale on September 8, 1946, and was professed on April 22, 1948. She taught English, French and Religion classes and prepared girls for confirmation. After the Academy closed in 1964, she remained involved with the retreat house there and the De Sales Library. In 1978, she and the remaining nuns moved to the Visitation Sisters Retreat House in Federal Way, Washington. That retreat house closed in 1993, and Sister Jeanne transferred to the Visitation Monastery in Philadelphia. For the past five years she has been a resident of Holy Family Home. On April 22, 2018, family and friends gathered with Sister Jeanne to celebrate her 70th anniversary of her profession.

Sister Jeanne is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, William Everett Johnson (and his wife, Mary Virginia), her four sisters, Frances Irene Johnson Carson (and husband, John), Marion Wood Johnson Coughenour (and husband, Kenneth), Josephine Johnson, and Catherine Wood Johnson Muetzel (and husband, Frank), and five beloved nieces.  She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their families.  A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date at the Monastery of the Visitation, 5820 City Ave., Philadelphia, PA. Interment will follow at the Resurrection Cemetery in Springfield, MO. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to either Sisters of the Visitation, 5820 City Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19131 or Holy Family Home, 5300 Chester Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19413.
