Marybelle Elizabeth Moore
1939 - 2025
Marybelle was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 27, 1939 to Katherine Robinson and Randolph Moore, the second of four sisters (Consuella, Brenda, and Carolyn). She is preceded in death by parents plus her sisters Consuella Ingersoll and Carolyn Moore.
Marybelle was a student in the Philadelphia Public School system, and graduated from the citywide school Girls High. She attended Cheyney State Teachers College in Cheyney, Pennsylvania, plus one year at the University of Mexico. She taught her entire career at Samuel B. Huey (Huey) in West Philadelphia. Marybelle's method of teaching inside and outside of the classroom inspired her students to excel in life.
Marybelle lived at Summit Park East Apartments for over 50 years, where she was a well-known member of the apartment complex and the Roxborough community. After retiring from Huey, Marybelle remained active in the community. She volunteered at the Andorra branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, where she taught senior citizens how to use the internet.
Marybelle was a world traveler, and made life-long friends in many of the countries she visited. She contributed to charitable organizations in the United States and abroad. Marybelle was a member of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, and a political activist. She marched in support of the union during school system strikes and at countless protest rallies.
Marybelle was a fan of many sports, especially boxing, football, and baseball. Her favorite sports teams were the Phillies and Eagles. Marybelle took countless pictures of her family which she kept organized in photo albums. The albums are well preserved, and provide fond memories the family will continue to cherish. She had a large collection of albums featuring different genres of music from around the world including rock, folk music, and reggae. Some of her favorite artists were Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Billy Joel. Marybelle read all of the Philadelphia newspapers and the New York Times everyday plus countless novels throughout her life. She inspired family members and friends to become readers through her influence.
Marybelle spent approximately the last 15 months of her life at the Cathedral Village assisted living facility in Andorra. The staff at Cathedral Village spoke fondly of her to family members that visited the facility. She continued to read three newspapers daily until she entered hospice. Marybelle passed on May 23, 2025 and is now resting in Peace.
Marybelle is survived by her sister (Brenda Strong), nephews (Bill Strong, his wife Elizabeth,and daughter Tiffany), Michael Strong, niece (Wanda Scott), cousins (Helen Peterson, Adam Sutton, Ashley Rossi, Shelton and Odell Lowe, Pat Johnson, Jackie and Buster Moore and Beverly Brodgen). Close friends include Tracy Hudgeons, Daniel Hoffman, and Teresa Coyle and siblings.
We will greatly miss Marybelle, but be forever influenced by her life and how she lived.
On Saturday, June 14th, friends and relatives are invited to greet Marybelle's family beginning at 10:30 AM at Koller Funeral Home, 6835 Ridge Ave, Phila. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:30 AM. Interment is Private.
