It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph G. Horan, a beloved father, grandfather, and cherished friend, who left this world on May 15, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on August 26, 1933, in Philadelphia, PA, Joseph lived a life dedicated to family, community, and service.
Joseph was the devoted husband of the late Florence Horan (nee Martin). He leaves behind his loving children, Joseph R. (Karen), Mary Ellen, Martin G. Horan, and Anne M. Rampone (Joseph Ignas), as well as his beloved grandchildren: Joseph, Maureen, Kera, Kaitlyn, Sean, Cole, Alyssa, and Alayna, who affectionately know him as Grumps. Loving uncle of the many (Martin) nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph A. Horan, and mother, Veronica Horan.
Joe retired as the Chief Operating Officer at Philadelphia Gas Works. He worked his way up in the company and he was known for his dedication. However, his greatest passions lay outside of work, where he found joy in coaching youth sports with the 21st Ward baseball and softball, IHM CYO, and Roxborough Eagles Athletics Association. He was not only a dedicated coach, but as a dedicated grandfather he showed up to every sporting event and yelled louder than anyone else, and yes...got kicked out a few times too. A lover of all sports, he remained an active participant in life, playing Senior softball until the age of 80 and was an active member of The Toads Golf Club until 90. His accomplishments were many, including winning the Senior World Softball Championship twice, being inducted in the Lou Cappiella Summit Chapter Sports Hall of Fame, and 21st Ward AA Hall of Fame, which filled him with pride.
Summer has always been the season that makes his family think of him. The Lykens lane house, the Outer banks house, as well as summers in LBI, they weren't just places - they were sanctuaries he created. One of his greatest joys was opening his home to others. Whether it was family, friends, neighbors, or anyone who happened to stop by, he loved nothing more than seeing his backyard full of laughter, conversation, and life. His pool was more than just a place to swim - it was where memories were made, stories were shared, and everyone always felt welcome.
Friends and family are invited to his Viewing at Koller Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 6-8 PM. On Thursday, a Viewing will occur at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at 9:00 AM, culminating in a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Interment in Westminster Cemetery.
