Joseph C. "Moose" DeMalto passed away on December 12, 2024 at the age of 97. Husband of the late Joan DeMalto, father of Len (Lisa), Karen Barr (John), Anthony (Suzanne), Thomas (Holly), Christine and the late baby Donna. Grandfather of John Barr (Michelle), Jessica Highland (Laura), Leonard, Nicholas (Stephanie), Emily (Anthony), Grace (David), Daniel and Julia (Dominic) DeMalto. Great grandfather of John Jr. and Max Barr, Noah and Avery Jackson, Willa Highland and Owen and Brody DeMalto. Son of the late Leonard and Anna DeMalto, brother of the late Mildred Krish (Paul) and Dominic DeMalto. He is also survived by many dear friends.
Born in Manayunk "Moose" was a graduate of St. John's Grade School and St. John's High School also in Manayunk. He would meet and marry the love of his life Joan Kern. They were married 66 years before Joan's passing in 2023. During this time "Moose" and Joan raised five children in the Wissahickon section of Philadelphia. Soon after they were blessed with eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren who all referred to him affectionately as "Pop Moose".
Throughout his life "Moose" had many great passions. His family always came first, and he loved being around them all. He had a special love for the youth of the area and coached and mentored them for many years. He had a special fondness for the men and women of our Armed Services. For many years he was dedicated to running and staying fit while making many friends at the Roxborough YMCA. Some of his greatest passions were his love for law enforcement and his best furry friends. He has eight immediate family members either retired or still in law enforcement and one Philadelphia fireman along with many, many more officers he knew and loved. His furry friends were really his best friends. Whether in the family or in the neighborhood "Moose" always had extra time for his pups. Always toting a pocket full of treats and always special praise for each. He will be tremendously missed but always in our hearts.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing on Wednesday, December 18th beginning at 9 AM at St. John the Baptist Church in Manayunk. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 AM. Interment in Westminster Cemetery.
