Hannah Clothier Pownall Obituary

Hannah Clothier Pownall of Philadelphia, 60, passed away surrounded by love and family on August 15, 2025.

Born to Charles and Hannah (nee Gallagher) Clothier, she was raised with the heart of a competitor and the spirit of a champion. She carried herself with the strength and fierce determination of a natural athlete - not just in sport, but in life. She was the kind of person that never backed down, who lifted others up, and who gave everything she had, every time.

She was guided through life by the unwavering love, humor, and strength of her seven siblings and their spouses, each of whom she admired and adored: Linda (Paul) Serwinski, Susan (Leonard) Barber, the late Charles (Antoinette) Clothier, David (Kathy) Clothier, Kelly (Jim) Garlick, the late Thomas (Cheryl) Clothier, and Jamie (Nicole) Clothier. She was a proud Aunt to many beloved nieces and nephews, a Great Aunt to the next generation, and a devoted Godmother. She loved her girlfriends and was a proud member of the "club".

In time, she met and married the love of her life, Elwood Pownall, and together they built a life rooted in love, strength, and unwavering commitment. Hannah was most proud of her three children Heather Pownall, Steven (Katie) Pownall, and Zachary Pownall. While she wore many titles with pride, the one she cherished most came later in life, when she became MomMom to her Grandson, Mac.

True to the spirit that defined her, she met every challenge- including the final one- with the same fire, fight, and fearlessness that made her a force both on and off the field. Her life was a masterclass in grit, loyalty, and dominance encapsulated by her induction into the Roxborough High School Sports Hall of Fame. She accomplished many feats of athleticism, most of which have yet to be beaten or repeated. She was competitive in all arenas of life, from sports to flipping baseball cards to the scrabble board. If she was playing, she was winning.

Hannah was endlessly proud of her children and all of their accomplishments. She poured love, laughter, and her competitive nature into her grandson. She cherished family gatherings, which filled her heart and gave her purpose. She never missed an opportunity to show her love with a hand written card, poem, or a personalized drawing of the Geezle Beezle cartoon character. She was an avid animal lover and a dog mom to many. She also loved to test her luck, and coined the phrase, "money won is a lot better than money earned... ching ching".

A celebration of her life will be held to honor her; details will be shared once plans are finalized.
