Daniel J. Dougherty, "Coach Doc", passed away on October 24, 2022 at the age of 87. Husband of Mary Ellen Dougherty (nee Hockenbury). Father of Kathleen Marshall, Dan Dougherty (Sandy), Mike Dougherty, and Brian Dougherty (Megan). Grandfather of Billie Marshall (Michael Ellis), Chelsea Makransky (Matt), Kieran Marshall (Chelsea Walrath), Kylie (Harrison Finberg), Zachary, Summer, Mia, and Connor Dougherty, Great grandfather of Mason, Molly, Austin, Jack, and Lincoln. Son of the late Robert and Rose Dougherty. Brother of Charles Dougherty, Roseanne McCartney (Bob), and the late Robert Dougherty. Coach Doc retired in 2010 as one of the all-time winningest coaches in Philadelphia high school basketball history. His career spanned 40 seasons, beginning at St. Pius X (1959 - 1961), and moving on to Malvern Prep (1962 - 1966), Penncrest (1976), and Episcopal Academy (1977 - 1997) (2001 - 2010). At the collegiate level, Dan was an assistant coach at Villanova under Jack Kraft (1967 - 1971), before moving on to become head coach at Army (1972 - 1975), succeeding Coach Bob Knight. Also an accomplished math teacher and adviser at the high school level, Coach Doc was a positive influence on many students throughout his career, many remembering him for his storytelling and integrity on and off the court. Relatives and friends are invited to greet his family on Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 819 East Cathedral Road, beginning at 9 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 AM.
