Mary D.
"Aunt Mary" Mcelwee
Nov 14, 1919 — Sep 9, 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary D. McElwee, our beloved sister, aunt and great aunt on September 9, 2016. Mary graduated from St. Edwards parochial school and West Catholic High School class of 1937. She was a particularly proud graduate of Immaculata College, class of 1941 to which she remained an active supporter and patron.
She started her working career at Arthur Murray as a dance instructor, but found her real calling as a travel professional, first with Amercan Express, then TWA. Mary took full advantage of the perks of being an agent and traveled throughout the world from Machu Picchu to East Berlin and beyond, always beautifully attired in a smart navy suit. Mary was a most devoted sister to her brother, George, and doting aunt to his children: Brian McElwee, Suzanne Schimaneck, Karen Miller and R. F. "Bob" McElwee. She spoiled us with love and attention and helped out in every way she could after our mother, Joan McElwee, passed away. Over the years, Mary became great aunt to four more nephews, Brian and Michael Schimaneck, Teddy and Jarret Miller and one great niece, Claire Schimaneck.
Mary's warmth and charity extended beyond her family to many charities, including her parish, St. Isaac Jogues, and the Jolly Jogues, the Iris Club, the Philopatrians and, of course, Immaculata. She never wavered in her faith and we are certain that the angels are thrilled that she has finally joined them.
She remained lifelong friends with her cohorts and others of all ages. She was simply "Aunt Mary" to all. She is survived by her brother George and his wife Rita McElwee, her nephews and nieces, their spouses: Donna McElwee, Frank Schimaneck and Rick Miller. She is predeceased by her mother, Laura Riehl, and brother, William McElwee. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 16, 10:00 AM at St. Isaac Jogues in Chesterbrook.
