Obituary

Madelyn P. Zehren (nee' Hill) of Roxborough.  March 26, 2021, Age 86.  Beloved wife of the late Joseph F. Zehren, Sr.  Mother of Joseph F. Zehren, JR. (Song), Michael T. Zehren (Susan), John R. Zehren (Pam), Madelyn L. Heckman (Art), Paul L. Zehren (Elaine), Celeste M. Zehren (Nick Sandoval), Richard G. Zehren (Roni), Francis X. Zehren, Brian P. Zehren (Stephanie), and the late David J. Zehren.  Madelyn was the grandmother (Nana) of 23 and great-grandmother of 17 with one on the way.

Upon our mother's passing, a few of us went to Koller Funeral Home.  We were received with warm blessings and condolences as Bill Koller sat us down.  Bill had a folder in his hand.  Notes our parents jotted down 30 years ago regarding their burial arrangements.  Our mother listed her occupation as "HOMEMAKER". We chuckled a bit as we thought how humble our mother was in this role.  She could have never imagined what her career choice as homemaker to 10 children was going to encompass.  In this capacity Madelyn mastered her skills into the Executive Director of the Zehren household.  Her qualifications included:

  • CFO with extensive knowledge of a budget and consumer spending.
  • Executive Secretary coordinated the daily plan, religious commitments, vacation planner, sports and social calendars, and never missed a birthday, anniversary, sympathy cards, or Christmas wishes.
  • Top Consultant dispensing common-sense advice regarding difficult decision making, friendships, relationships, and career paths.
  • Medical training included nurse practitioner, therapist, and phycologist.
  • Master Chef cooking up delicious meals several times a day (and no one ever touched the covered plate sitting at the table awaiting the last sibling to get home that evening).
  • Creative Designer as a talented seamstress.  She also made crocheting and needlepoint look easy.
  • Army General effortlessly designating household chores, laundry requirements, and at times, Referee.
  • Logistics Specialist taxiing us around with knowledge of the quickest traveling routes. Designated the prettiest Co-Pilot on long family trips.
  • Master of Unconditional Love.  As Madelyn's family grew she welcomed daughter-in-laws and son-in-laws with opened arms.  She smiled proudly around her beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dearest family members and friends described her as warm, loving, kind, generous, funny, and all welcoming.
  • Extra Curricular:  Shared 10 years of Marriage Encounter with Joe.  Talented artist enjoying years of painting and ceramics.  Loyal member of the Redhats.  Crossword puzzle enthusiast.  Years of bowling rounded out her athletic ability.  As most importantly, Madelyn was a genuine lover and partner to her beloved Joe (aka Hon).

Relatives and friends are invited to Visitation on May 20 at 10 a.m. at St Helena Church, 1489 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA.  A Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m.  Private interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  In Lieu of Flowers donations may be made to Little Flower Catholic High School, 100 W. Lycoming St., Philadelphia, PA 19140.
