Obituary

It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of John "Jack" Woods of Roxborough. He passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 1st at the age of 61.

Predeceased by his parents John and Rita Woods, Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara McGlade Woods, and his five children: John, Keith (Kristen), Kristen (J.J.), Sean (Christine) and Christopher (Kelly). Jack was the devoted grandfather of Kayla, Grace, Madeline, Nolan and Dylan. Also survived by his sisters, Eileen Xenakes, Lizanne (Bob) DiLella, Mary Louise (Dan) D'Imperio, and brother Jamie (Vicky). He was the loving uncle of many nieces and nephews.

A 1976 graduate of Roxborough High School… Jack went on to work for decades at Lockheed-Martin and most recently in the Security Department at Chestnut Hill College.

He loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed trips to the beach, which allowed him the opportunity to do some surf fishing. But the biggest love and passion in his life was sports, which started as a child… almost as soon as he could walk.

Jack was a big fan of the pro teams, especially the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies… but his passion was truly with organized youth sports. He was associated with the Wissahickon Braves for decades… in his youth as a player and then as a coach. One of his proudest moments came in 1999 when he coached the Braves through an undefeated season to win the KSL championship.

He was a friend and mentor to many of his players in the Wissahickon A.A. as he inspired these young men to never quit and to never give up on the field… and in life to always give it your all!

Over his decades-long commitment to youth sports he received numerous awards, but Jack was most proud when he was named the Person of the Year in 2002 by the Immaculata Council of the Knights of Columbus, and in 2011 when he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Jack was also a well-respected umpire to many organizations, including the 21st Ward, PIAA, and the Manayunk Sports and Social Club.

Because of the current health crisis, a celebration of life for Jack will be held at a later date.

Those desiring to honor Jack's memory may do so by making a contribution to the Salem County Humane Society: North Game Creek Road, P.O. Box 214, Carneys Point, NJ 08069… or to the charity of your choice.
