John W. "Junie" Maiden, December 26, 2014.
Survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rita (nee Laubach); father of Maureen Flynn (John), Robert Maiden (Janice), Denise Boschetti (Frank), and John J. Maiden (Sharon); grandfather of Bob, Louis, Christina, Frank, Patrick, Brynn and Matthew; brother of Gerald, Thomas, and the late Edward "Ron" Maiden.
John excelled at football, baseball and basketball for Roxborough High School. Playing quarterback, punter and placekicker, he was selected All Public in football three years in a row leading his team to a record of 23 -4 during those years. In 1946 he was selected by the Philadelphia 100 Club as the "Outstanding Scholastic Athlete". John was also honorable mention All Public in basketball. He earned a football scholarship to Temple University where he played for two years. In 1950 he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an outfielder and joined the Tallahassee FL team which won the Farm Team Championship that year. In 1951 he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War conflict but was assigned to border patrol on the border between Germany and Russia. While in the army John continued playing baseball and football on a divisional level and was selected to the 1952 All South Europe baseball team. After his military service, John played football with the Wissahickon Hawks, who were the Philadelphia Heavyweight Champs in 1953, and was selected as the Wissahickon Hawks Outstanding Athlete that year. John was inducted into both the Roxborough High School and 21 st Ward Sports Halls of Fame. He began his working career as the owner of Maidens Sporting Goods and finished as a salesman for the 3M Company.
Family and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday, January 3rd at 9:30am at Saint Philip Neri Church, 437 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA 19444, followed by his funeral mass at 11am.
