Ferne cared for her patients with compassion and became a pillar of support in her community.
Ferne Ora Horwhat, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on November 22, 1941, in Shenandoah, PA, Ferne was the beloved daughter of Franklin and Fern King. She spent her formative years in her hometown before moving to Philadelphia, where she dedicated her life to her family and her noble profession as a Registered Nurse.
Ferne's career began after she obtained her nursing degree, leading her to a fulfilling tenure of over 40 years at Roxborough Memorial Hospital. There, she cared for her patients with compassion and became a pillar of support in her community, leaving a lasting impact on all who were fortunate to know her.
A devoted mother, Ferne raised her daughters, Christine Horwhat and Karen Rosenburg, in a home filled with love. She was also the proud grandmother to Donna, Joseph, Robert, and Audrey, and a great-grandmother to many, including Robert, Jaylynn, Holley, Kayla, Sophia, Riley, Aaron, Alanna, Alex, Johan, Pharell, and Christopher. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Phyllis King, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ferne was preceded in death by her husband George and her son Christopher, as well as her brother Franklin King, who remained close to her heart.
Ferne was an active member of her church community, where she found joy in service and fellowship. Her kindness and generosity will be remembered by all whose lives she touched.
Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Ferne's life at Koller Funeral Home on October 17, 2026. A Visitation will be held at 9:30 AM, leading into a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment is private.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Ferne's memory, honoring her spirit of giving and her commitment to caring for others.
Though she will be deeply missed, the legacy of love, compassion, and resilience that Ferne leaves behind will forever linger in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
