David J.
Byrne, Sr.
Apr 22, 1951 — Aug 17, 2021
On Tuesday, August 17, 2021, David J. Byrne, Sr., loving father of Jennifer V. Taylor (David), David J. Byrne, Jr. (Jillian) and Daniel J. Byrne (Victoria), beloved Pop-Pop to Isabelle R.Taylor, was called home to God at the age of 70. He is also survived by brothers, Msgr. Albert J. Byrne, Robert J. Byrne (Jeanne) and sister Carol A. Miller-Brough (Jack), former spouse Christine A. Byrne and many nieces and nephews.
Our dad, fondly known as Big D or LT, was born April 22, 1951 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Albert J. and Mary C. Byrne. Dave grew up in Overbrook and was a graduate of St. Thomas Moore High School. After graduation, he served our country in the Air Force Reserves from 1969 to 1975. After serving in the Air Force, Dave worked as a florist at Rose Floral and Overhill Flower Shop. He continued working with flowers up until his passing.
In 1978, Dave started his career as a police officer and proudly served the City of Philadelphia for 36 years, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant.
Our dad was the most loyal person you could ever meet. He would help anyone out and would always have your back. Dave was the type of person who would talk to and befriend anyone. He had more friends than we could count and many we call aunts and uncles. Even though Dave is no longer here, he will always be with us. Heaven received a good one and we all take comfort in knowing that he is watching over us and will have our backs.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association would be greatly appreciated.
Covid guidelines will be followed and we ask that you wear a mask around the family members.
Services will be held Tuesday, August 24th by Koller Funeral Home. Viewing will be at 9:30am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 819 E Cathedral Rd, Philadelphia, PA 19128. Mass will be following the viewing at 11am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 819 E Cathedral Rd, Philadelphia, PA 19128. The burial will be private.
