Spangler
Jan 6, 1943 — Jan 6, 2023
CAROL ANN SPANGLER of Cathedral Village, Philadelphia, PA joined the chorus of saints on her 80th birthday, January 6, 2023. Predeceased by parents Vernon M. Spangler and Lois R. Speicher Spangler from Shanksville, PA, and daughter Mardi Ann Lowry McDonough-Downs, State College, PA (Nick Downs). Survived by son, Eric C. Lowry (Marta Villarraga ), Ardmore, PA, granddaughters Sofia R. Lowry and Isabela T. Lowry, Ardmore, PA and Colleen McDonough, Denver, Colorado and Grace McDonough, State College, PA; siblings Jack S. Spangler (Bev Gerhardt), Goodlettsville, TN; Marcia S. Sharpe (Dr. Rudolph Sharpe) Hummelstown, PA; Denise S. Zechman (Edwin (Ned) K. Zechman) Ocean City, NJ and Sarasota, FL.; and MANY nieces and nephews. Carol was a 1960 graduate of Shanksville-Stonycreek High School where she was the drum major for the marching band and Cheerleader for the Vikings. She attended Cambria Rowe Business College in Johnstown, PA, and was the former Administrative Assistant to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at Penn State University and retired from Penn State College of Engineering Dean's Office. She oversaw fellowship Awards for Engineering Grad Students as well as administrative support for the dean. Carol was an accomplished pianist, a former member of the Sweet Adelines State College, a former member of the State College Jr. Women's Club, and a member of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Carol's joy was found through her family, music and the Penn State Nittany Lions. She always spoke so highly of her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments, which are many. She began the lineage of drum majors as her daughter, Mardi and granddaughter Colleen were drum majors for the State College High School Marching Band. Carol taught us how to keep living even when facing extreme challenges. Her sense of humor, her beautiful blue eyes, her loving smile and her laughter will be sorely missed. Sing on, Carol. The heavenly choir just received a gem. Services to honor Carol's life will be scheduled later in Spring 2023. Memorial gifts may be made in her memory to: Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation ( https://tnbcfoundation.org/support-us/donate), where she was raising donations for her 80th birthday.
