Ann Alvernia
(Mortimer) Tyska
Jun 15, 1926 — Dec 22, 2021
Ann Alvernia Tyska (nee Mortimer), 95, formerly of Roxborough, Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in her sleep December 22nd while in hospice care at St Joseph's Hospital, Bellingham, WA near her assisted living facility and son Carl's residence. She was the wife of her high school sweetheart, the late John Patrick Tyska (2017) also of Philadelphia, to whom she was married for 68 years. She was the Mother to Robert Daniel Tyska (Betsy), Daniel John Tyska (Barbara), Joseph Anthony Tyska (Margaret) and Carl Francis Tyska (Belva). Over her life Ann had 14 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren with her 14th Great Grandchild on the way. Ann was born to Harold and Catherine Mortimer (deceased) on June 15th, 1926, and is pre-deceased by her three siblings, Mary, Geraldine, and Robert.
Ann loved the medical field and started her career as a Red Cross Volunteer in WWII while John was deployed to Japan while they were engaged. After living in a modest home in West Philadelphia and giving birth to 4 active boys, Ann and John moved to Roxborough in 1963 buying the model home at 742 Livezey Lane. It was here that they became part of a stellar group of parents of the many "Henry-Livezey Outback Kids." Later in life with all her children almost grown, she became an LPN for the Masonic Village of Lafayette Hill for over 20 years and then worked in private practice until her retirement in her late 50's.
Ann lived for vacations with John and her family to Florida, Disneyland, Las Vegas, and the Jersey shore (especially the Steel Pier) owning time shares near each of those areas. She loved Bowling, Water Skiing, Football as well as Crocheting, Knitting, and making sequined Christmas decorations. Ann also loved to sing in choir and support her community. She sang in the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Church choir for 25 years where her son Carl joined with her for 3 years. She was a regular volunteer at the IHM Annual Fair and chaperone for IHM School Dances as well as a IHM Cub Scout Pack 474 Den Mother in the 1970's. Ann served her community of Roxborough as a member of the Green Valley Civic Association throughout 1960's with long time Roxborough High School Principal Robert G. Hoffman.
In 2013, after 50 years of living in their model home in Roxborough, Ann and John moved to Bellingham, WA into an assisted living facility near their son Carl. There they enjoyed going to many of their Grandkids family high school alma mater sporting events and band concerts; theatre shows, dinners, movies, and family BBQ's; and of course, Carl and Belva's family vacations around Washington State and down to the Medford, Oregon area to see Carl's children living there. For what would become their final vacation, over Halloween 2016 Carl and his Oregon daughters teamed up and made plans take "Nan and Pop Pop John" and their West Coast family to Disneyland for a week. They were surrounded by 15 family members for which included their 6 Grandkids, and 4 Great Grandkids. Lasting memories were made all week. No doubt about it, Ann and her life's sweetheart John Tyska lived "A Wonderful Life"
Relatives, friends, and everyone from the "Henry-Livezey Outback Kids" group are invited to her Funeral Service on Saturday, March 5th at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 815 Cathedral Rd, in Andorra, Philadelphia.
